What are the changes in Occupational Health and Safety(OHSAS) ISO 45001:2015 standard?

An overview of ISO 45001:2015

Occupational health and safety is a practice that works to improve levels of workplace safety in a place of work. ISO 45001:2015 is the world’s first international standard that works to ensure occupational health and safety for the workers in a company. It was put in place to ensure that there is an internationally recognized system for improving health and safety performance in a workplace.

Comparing OHSAS 18001 with ISO 45001:2015

Before the establishment of ISO 45001:2015, the benchmark for occupational health and safety was OHSAS 18001. It was solely based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle and it focused on managing Occupational Health and Safety hazards and other internal issues.

ISO 45001:2015 was formed by keeping some elements of OHSAS 18001 to create an internationally recognized standard for occupational health and safety. However, it is a completely new standard for companies and not a revision of the 18001 standards. The ISO 45001:2015 has adopted the Annex SL High-Level Structure (HSL) instead of the PDCA cycle.

ISO 45001:2015 is developed to facilitate the integration of new management topics into an organization’s existing management system. Unlike OHSAS 18001, ISO 45001:2015 focuses on interactions between an organization and its business organization instead of only managing internal issues and hazards. ISO 45001 ensures that senior management is involved in driving performance improvements and in taking responsibility for the protection of their employees.
